Manchester United:Louis van Gaal wants a creative midfielder but who should he sign?
The United boss feels he has been forced to play Wayne Rooney in a deeper role because of a lack of options.
“Signing a creative player should be our priority this summer,” said Van Gaal. “I'm looking for balance and I need it in midfield. Wayne is playing in midfield because there is no one else.”
While that will be disappointing news to the likes of Ander Herrera, United supporters will be encouraged by the prospect of a big-name arrival in time for the start of next season.
But who are the candidates? Here we pick out some of the star names from the continent who could transform the United midfield…
Ilkay Gundogan (Borussia Dortmund)
It’s been a difficult season for Borussia Dortmund but the diminutive 24-year-old has largely been spared from criticism with supporters feeling the Germany international has lacked support in the centre of the pitch. Gundogan missed last summer’s World Cup through injury but prior to that disappointment had established himself as one of Europe’s most promising playmakers with his efficient use of the ball and technical expertise. With Dortmund set to miss out on Champions League football next season, this could be one player actively seeking a move in the summer.
Koke (Atletico Madrid)
Herrera might have struggled to impress Van Gaal, but if the Dutchman is keen to go back to Spain in search of a solution then the Atletico midfielder would seem a good fit. Koke has emerged as a regular starter in Vicente del Bosque’s national team and is a combative figure with quality on the ball. The 23-year-old ranks behind only Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Denis Cheryshev for La Liga assists this season. Although a proud Atleti man, his current club would be unable to match the salary United can offer and that means a switch to Manchester cannot be ruled out.
Paul Pogba (Juventus)
Pogba is the prodigal son for many United fans left frustrated by the way the Frenchman slipped through their fingers after impressing as a teenager. Still only 21, his emergence at Juventus has been as impressive as it was predictable and his six Serie A goals from a deep role only hints at his significance to the Italian champions. Chelsea have proven with Nemanja Matic that there is little sense in being proud when it comes to paying big for the one that got away and if Van Gaal thinks Pogba is the man then the player could be convinced he has unfinished business at United.
Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich)
If the United boss wants an experienced option at the heart of his midfield then Schweinsteiger must surely rank near the top of his list. Of course, Van Gaal has worked with the World Cup winner during his time at Bayern and played a key role in completing the 30-year-old’s transformation from flying winger to deep-lying playmaker. Schweinsteiger’s effective use of the ball coupled with an ability to drive forwards when appropriate would make him a good fit if he can prove his fitness. With the player no longer an automatic starter under Pep Guardiola, there will be speculation.
Kevin Strootman (Roma)
Strootman was the man identified by Van Gaal as the fulcrum of his World Cup midfield and deemed so pivotal to the system that the then Netherlands boss even abandoned his plans once the Roma midfielder was ruled out through injury. Naturally, the 25-year-old has been linked with a move to Manchester United ever since. Two assists in his first three starts upon his return was evidence of his class, but a setback against Fiorentina last month means Strootman is injured again and Van Gaal will have to wait to see if the player can prove his fitness over a prolonged period.
Marco Verratti (Paris St Germain)
The 22-year-old is one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe and would appear to fit Van Gaal’s criteria of creating from deep. Verratti can occupy a holding role and his 91.3 per cent pass completion rate this year is impressive, but that doesn’t prevent him from making things happen further forwards. Only winger Lucas Moura has completed more dribbles for PSG and he also ranks top when it comes to through-balls for the Ligue 1 champions. Arsenal and Barcelona have been linked with a move for the Italy international and it would be a challenge for executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to pull off this deal.
Arturo Vidal (Juventus)
The supposed pursuit of the powerhouse Chile international was one of the sagas of the summer on social media and Vidal’s name will crop up again now that Van Gaal has outlined his intention to enter the market for a midfielder. The 27-year-old’s form has failed to hit the heights this season but he’s still weighed in with six Serie A goals in a team that sits seven points clear at the top of the table. If Juventus are prepared to deal at a sum considerably less than would have been quoted last summer then perhaps United will be tempted after all.

Chelsea: Jose Mourinho has twice turned down the offer to coach PSG
PSG approached Mourinho in 2011 and again two years later, with the former Porto and Inter Milan boss travelling to Qatar for discussions.
The owners of the French champions are desperate to dominate European football, and former midfielder Leonardo was also involved in the talks with the Portuguese.
“I know the PSG project well, I know it well because when they start this project with the owner, the president and Leonardo, I was to be the coach,” said Mourinho.

“I know the PSG project well, I know it well because when they start this project with the owner, the president and Leonardo, I was to be the coach,” said Mourinho.
“They are in the League Cup final, they are in the quarter-finals of the French Cup, they are two points behind the leaders so the domination of France is there.
“They want to dominate in Europe too and, to be fair, you look to Paris in the last two seasons in the Champions League and they lost in the quarter-finals, once narrowly to Barcelona and last season against Chelsea in the last second.
“So they know and they feel they are there. They are there. Paris is a big team with big ambitions.”
Mourinho was tempted to join PSG, but he opted to stay in Spain as he felt he had unfinished business with Real Madrid.
He said: “Because I was in Real Madrid and it was a real ambition for me to be champion in Spain, England and Italy.
“It was a big challenge for me and a big challenge to compete directly against the best, Barcelona, probably the best team in Europe for the last decade for sure. It was not the right moment for me to go.”
Manchester United insists the club must sign a creative midfielder this summer
The Dutchman has tried a variety of combinations in an attempt to find balance in midfield, but has been forced to play forward Wayne Rooney out of position in order to do so.
Van Gaal, whose side travel to Preston in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday night, insists Rooney is happy to play in midfield but admits he is playing there because “there is no one else”.
“Signing a creative player should be our priority this summer,” the 63-year-old said. “I'm looking for balance and I need it in midfield.
“In the last few games I’ve played Adnan Januzaj and Angel Di Maria in the midfield positions, and you need a certain balance for that kind of creative player.
"Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie are also creative players so then you have four of them, and you still have to look for balance in your team.
Louis van Gaal on Wayne Rooney
“Wayne is playing in midfield because there is no one else. He's happy to do so otherwise he should come to me and say he's not, but he never does. He's always friendly to me and wants to perform.
"But of course when the whole world is writing that he has to be in the striker's position then he will be thinking ‘hey, maybe'. He’s human."
United have inevitably been linked with a string of midfield players since Van Gaal took over, most notably the Dutch international Kevin Strootman of Roma and former United academy graduate Paul Pogba, who is at Juventus.
Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola told Sky Sports News last month that he anticipates a fierce bidding war for the France international’s signing this summer and insisted the player is not upset with United for previously letting him go.
Raiola said: “Paul has always said he is not angry with Manchester United – you need to move on.
“There is no personal grudge. On the contrary, he holds Manchester United very dear and has very nice memories there.”

Chelsea transfer latest: Douglas Costa begs Shakhtar Donetsk
Douglas Costa has begged Shakhtar Donetsk not to price him out of a move to Chelsea with the Blues still in for Juan Cuadrado.
Fiorentina have already rejected an approach from the Blues and insist Cuadrado will not leave for less than his £26.8million release clause. The 24-year-old wideman has made it clear to the club that he wants to move to west London.
Costa, however, has revealed he has also already spoken to Shakhtar, asking the Ukrainian club to show flexibility on the £30million they want for him.
He said: “I put my situation to them and they said they would try to help me. Now, we’ll see if it comes to an agreement.”
Costa also admitted he is desperate to play for Jose Mourinho. He said: “To play at Chelsea is a dream for any player... but really, what catches my eye is the coach

Manchester United transfers latest: Kevin Strootman update, Paul Pogba hope
Manchester United transfers: Kevin Strootman update, Paul Pogba hope
Here is a round-up of the latest rumours involving The Reds as we enter the final week of the January transfer window.
Kevin Strootman limped off 34 minutes into Roma's match with Fiorentina with a knee injury and coach Rudi Garcia has admitted it is "still a delicate area".
The knock will scupper any chance of United signing the Dutchman this month, an inevitable outcome given Strootman only returned from his nine-month lat-off in November.
With Darren Fletcher in the departure lounge, Louis van Gaal was believed to be keen on recruiting a defensive midfielder this window but is going to have to wait.
Another midfielder United fans are pining for, Paul Pogba, "has a price", though.
United went toe-to-toe with Real Madrid for Raphael Varane in 2011 before they ended up signing Phil Jones and The Reds face a similar duel for Athletic Bilbao's Aymeric Laporte.
Laporte, 20, has emerged as one of the most impressive young centre halves in Europe over the last year and has a buyout clause of £31.5m.
The likelihood is United will be in the market for two centre-backs, one up-and-coming - like Laporte - and an established defender, such as Mats Hummels.
Plenty of Reds would be happy with right-back Nathaniel Clyne coming into Old Trafford, but the Southampton defender is negotiating a new contract at St Mary's.
The England international, 23, is out of contract next year.
And Louis van Gaal blocked Adnan Januzaj's transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.
Louis van Gaal's Manchester United signing (shopping) list
James Cooper believes there could be some stellar names on their way to Old Trafford. "There are almost limitless resources at the moment when you bear in mind Adidas are coming on board in June with a huge kit sponsorship deal worth more than £700m," he said.
"The summer is going to be spectacular. There is an awful lot of money to spend and there is a list of players."
So, with big funds at his disposal, who might Van Gaal target? Defensive options are clearly a priority but United have been linked with plenty of attacking flair, too. Here are a selection of players who might be on Van Gaal's wish list...
Cristiano Ronaldo – Forward, Real Madrid
Cristiano Ronaldo: one of Old Trafford’s favourite sons. The two-time Ballon d’Or winner, who helped Real Madrid to La Decima last season, declared in 2013 he wanted to retire at the Spanish club. However, the Portuguese’s love for United cannot be underestimated and with Van Gaal set to have huge sums at his disposal, could an audacious bid be on the way? At 29 Ronaldo seems to be getting better and better. Would Real seriously consider selling their prized asset? For United, there is only one way to find out…"The summer is going to be spectacular. There is an awful lot of money to spend and there is a list of players."

Cristiano Ronaldo – Forward, Real Madrid
Lionel Messi – Forward, Barcelona
Gareth Bale – Forward, Real Madrid
Mats Hummels - Defender, Borussia Dortmund
Kevin Strootman – Midfielder, Roma
Nathaniel Clyne – Defender, Southampton
Marquinhos – Defender, PSG
With Angel di Maria and Juan Mata among his attacking midfield options, you may think Van Gaal is well covered in that area, but a bid for talented Belgian Axel Witsel may prove tempting. The 26-year-old has over 50 caps for his country and has won trophies in Belgium and Portugal, while his current club Zenit are on course to win the Russian league. Signed for £32.5m in September 2012, Witsel won’t come cheap, but he has recently expressed his admiration for United. “I want to play in one of the top clubs in Europe one day,” he said recently. “It’s true that I like the Premier League, because it is one of the best leagues in the world. A lot of my colleagues play there, but we will see. I have always liked Manchester United from when I was young.”
Paul Pogba – Midfielder, Juventus
Nicolas Otamendi – Defender, Valencia
Paulo Dybala – Striker, Palermo
Bruno Martins Indi – Defender, Porto
"Spiritually, I still have contact with Van Gaal. I think about him and I think he also thinks about me," Bruno Martins Indi recently said. The 22-year-old centre-back/left-back played at the World Cup under Van Gaal as Netherlands finished third, and seems keen on the idea of reuniting with his former national team coach at some point. Martins Indi transferred to Porto from Feyenoord in July 2014 but would be a cheaper defensive option than the likes of Hummels or Marquinhos.
