AC Milan have added to speculation they are preparing a January bid for Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli.

The former Inter Milan player's future is uncertain in England after starting just one of his club's last eight matches in all competitions, including only making a substitute appearance in Tuesday's defeat by Borussia Dortmund.


City boss Roberto Mancini has been a long-term fan of Balotelli but it appears his trust in the £24million summer 2010 signing is slipping after several negative headline-grabbing incidents.
And Milan could be ready to offer the Italy international a return to his homeland with a bid when the transfer window opens in less than a month.
Speaking before Milan's Champions League defeat by Zenit St Petersburg on Tuesday night, boss Massimiliano Allegri said of Balotelli: "He is an important player with extraordinary physical and technical qualities.
   "I believe, however, given his qualities, he threw away a few years of his career."
Allegri has also hinted current Milan star Stephan El Shaarawy and Balotelli would make a lethal attacking combination for the club.
"I think they have done good things with the Italian national team," said Allegri. "But I want to talk about AC Milan and the players I have. Then, in January, we will see what happens."
Milan president Silvio Berlusconi has also suggested a move for Balotelli is not just a fantasy after giving a teasing response when asked about the 22-year-old.
Berlusconi told Sky Sport Italia when questioned if Balotelli is a dream: "No, it's not a dream. I never dream."

CHELSEA VS SUNDERLAND

Rafa Benitez continues his search for a first Premier League win as Chelsea manager as his side travel to Sunderland.

The Spaniard is looking to avoid writing his name into Chelsea's record books as the first manager not to taste victory in their first four Premier League games.
But hopes will be high that they have turned the corner following their 6-1 thrashing of FC Nordsjaelland in the UEFA Champions League.
Their poor run of form in the past month has seen Chelsea slide to third in the Premier League and defeat this Saturday could result in them dropping to sixth by the end of the weekend.
However, Chelsea are playing one of only four teams below them in the form guide in the shape of Sunderland, who have just two wins in their last 22.
And history is also very much in Chelsea's favour as they have won 14 of their last 15 games against Sunderland

Rafael insists that it would be a huge boost for Manchester United if they could open a six-point gap on rivals Manchester City.

The two clash on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium with United currently holding a three-point lead on the champions.
Even though the season is not yet halfway through, Rafael knows the meeting with their fierce rivals is a great chance for United to open up a significant lead.
"If we open the gap it can make the other team nervous and make it easier for us," said the Brazilian.

"There is definitely a determination to get the title back after the way we lost it. It was hard to take.

"We will never forget how we felt after the last game. We just looked at each other and asked, 'How did we lose that?' After last season, we just want the title back."
Rafael was taken off in United's last game at Reading after just half-an-hour as they struggled to cope against the Royals, before edging a seven-goal thriller.
And he admits that they were not good enough despite their 4-3 victory at the Madejski, adding: "If we defend like we did at Reading against a team like City we will be in trouble, that is 100 per cent.
"This will be our biggest test of the season so we need to concentrate well

A quick-fire three-goal salvo saw Manchester United come from behind to beat Harry Redknapp's new club Queens Park Rangers 3-1 on Saturday, propelling them to the top of the Premier League.
Incoming QPR manager Redknapp was present at Old Trafford, hours after his appointment as the successor to Mark Hughes was confirmed, and he saw his new charges take a shock lead in the 52nd minute.
Kieron Dyer's cross-shot from the left was palmed out by Anders Lindegaard and Jamie Mackie found the roof of the net from close range.
After losing at Norwich City and Galatasaray in their last two outings, United were staring at the prospect of a third consecutive defeat, but three goals in the space of eight minutes saw them roar into the lead.
Jonny Evans headed in the equaliser from close range in the 64th minute and four minutes later, Darren Fletcher marked his first league appearance in over a year by scoring with a thumping header from Wayne Rooney's corner.
Substitute Javier Hernandez then beat QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar from Anderson's pass in the 72nd minute to kill the game off and lift Alex Ferguson's men two points above Manchester City at the summit.
City are not in action until Sunday, when they visit fourth-place Chelsea and their new interim coach, Rafael Benitez.
"We only played for 10 minutes and those 10 minutes were brilliant. I thought Anderson changed the game for us," said Ferguson, who also praised Fletcher for battling to overcome a career-threatening bowel condition.

Aston Villa clambered out of the relegation zone at the expense of Reading after an uneventful 0-0 draw at home to Arsenal, who finished the day four points below the Champions League places in sixth position.
Villa winger Andreas Weimann had a goal ruled out for offside in the first half, while Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny spurned his side's best chance by shooting over from eight yards.

Everton were prevented from closing to within a point of Chelsea as Sebastien Bassong netted a last-minute equaliser to earn Norwich a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.
Steven Naismith had given the hosts the lead with a 12th-minute tap-in before Bassong struck at the death, meeting Wes Hoolahan's deep free-kick with a back-post header.
Earlier, West Bromwich Albion continued their superb start to the season with a 4-2 win at Sunderland that took them up to third place.
Zoltan Gera's curling 25-yarder put the visitors ahead after half an hour's play at the Stadium of Light, before a fumble from Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet gifted Shane Long the Baggies' second.
Romelu Lukaku's 81st-minute penalty made it 3-1 after Craig Gardner had scored with a deflected free-kick, but Stephane Sessegnon brought Sunderland back into the game again with a late strike from close range.
However, Steve Clarke's men struck again in injury time through substitute Marc-Antoine Fortune to secure a fourth straight league win.
"To talk about European football at this stage would be folly," warned West Brom coach Clarke.
"There are a lot of games to go, so we'll keep our feet on the ground."
Wigan Athletic prevailed 3-2 at home to fellow relegation contenders Reading after Jordi Gomez completed a hat-trick with an injury-time winner at the DW Stadium.
Reading looked to have snatched a point in the 80th minute when Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi allowed Hal Robson-Kanu's deflected shot to squirm into the net, only for Gomez to restore Wigan's advantage in stoppage time.
Stoke City defeated Fulham 1-0 at the Britannia Stadium, with Charlie Adam claiming the game's only goal in the 26th minute to take his side above Liverpool and into 11th place.

Best of the Match

• Man of the match: Patrice Evra. The United left-back produced a superb performance both in defence and attack, culminating in his header to finally bag the crucial second goal.
• Goal of the match: It mattered little, but Santi Cazorla's delightful curling effort in the fifth minute of stoppage time was a moment of class in a poor Arsenal performance.
• Save of the match: Vito Mannone denied his former team-mate Van Persie in the second half, getting his fingertips to a low shot and diverting it just wide.
• Attempt of the match: Rooney's lashed effort from the left in the first half appeared goalbound until Mannone intervened.
• Talking point: United pick up three more points with a non-vintage performance and go to the top with 24 points from 10 games. Can they reclaim their Premier League title?

The £24million striker took just three minutes to score against the club he left in the summer, and the hosts could even afford the luxury of a missed Wayne Rooney penalty as Patrice Evra's second (67) and a red card for Jack Wilshere made it another dismal day in Manchester for Arsene Wenger despite Santi Cazorla's late reply (90).
The scoreline may have lacked the ruthlessness of last season's 8-2, but with 10 games gone Arsenal are worse off than in any previous season under Wenger - nine points behind United, who moved a point clear at the top thanks to Swansea's draw with Chelsea and Manchester City's stalemate at West Ham
It took until injury-time for the visitors to bring a first save out of David De Gea, a lack of bite which was brought into painful focus by the menace of their former captain.
Van Persie had scored nine in 12 appearances for United so he scarcely needed the invitation to shoot provided by Thomas Vermaelen, whose miscued clearance from Rafael da Silva's innocuous cross fell perfectly for his former team-mate to bobble a 20-yard shot beyond Vito Mannone.
The goal left Arsenal chasing for the eighth time in 11 games, and an obvious lack of confidence in possession allowed United to wait for a mistake, Aaron Ramsey's dithering on halfway inviting a break which ended with Mannone keeping out Van Persie at his near post.
And when the Gunners defence was slow to follow out Bacary Sagna's headed clearance Michael Carrick returned the ball for Wayne Rooney, whose left-footed drive brought a more convincing stop from the Italian.
United should have put it to bed either side of half-time, but Rooney dragged his penalty wide after Cazorla had handled in the box and Antonio Valencia miskicked in front of goal after another Vermaelen blunder put Van Persie in.
Arsenal briefly threatened to cash in, Olivier Giroud spinning onto Cazorla's pass and clipping the outside of the near post, but only a fingertip stop from Mannone denied Van Persie a second and when the resulting corner was played short Rooney's cross was headed in by Evra.
Any realistic chance of a comeback disappeared down the tunnel with Wilshere - given a second booking for catching Evra on the overstretch - and Cazorla's fine injury-time goal was a barely relevant footnote.

Before Cazorla's late consolation, Van Persie and substitute Anderson both thought they had added a third for United but were both correctly denied by an offside flag.
While Cazorla's goal had given Arsenal fans something to cheer, United had been superior in almost every department against a side they fought out a bitter rivalry with in the last decade.
The sight of Van Persie in their ranks will have hurt, and the Arsenal supporters had made it clear from the moment his name was first read out what they now thought of their former hero.
And with England midfielder Wilshere sent off on only his second appearance for the Gunners in the last 17 months, it had been a journey north to forget.

CHALSEA DRAWN WITH SWANSEA

 

Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo felt the performance of referee Kevin Friend in the draw at Swansea City justified his faith in match officials.
The European champions are currently at the heart of a storm after accusing Mark Clattenburg of racially abusing John Obi Mikel.
And it had been reported Di Matteo was worried the case would see Chelsea suffer at the hands of match officials.
But after the 1-1 result at Swansea, the Italian told Sky Sports: "I always said I don't fear that. I have faith in the officials. Today was a very good performance by them."
Asked specifically about Friend, Di Matteo said: "I thought he was terrific. The referee had a fantastic game today and let the game play. I told him after the game."
Chelsea surrendered top spot in the Premier League to Manchester United as a consequence of the draw with Swansea, who equalised Victor Moses' opener through Pablo Hernandez's late strike, and Di Matteo was disappointed.
But Chelsea have played three games in less than a week following last Sunday's controversial defeat by United, when the accusation against Clattenburg took place, before gaining revenge against Sir Alex Ferguson's team after extra time in the Capital One Cup.
And Di Matteo said: "Mentally and physically it has been very demanding, playing two games against Manchester United and also the extra time.
"But the players responded with a lot of commitment today and we nearly won."
