Manchester United’s hopes of marching towards a 13th Barclays Premier League title suffered a minor setback as they were held to a 2-2 by West Ham United at Upton Park, while Manchester City edged a hard-fought victory over Wigan Athletic.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were hoping to bring another Premier League crown to within touching distance, but after making a sluggish start twice fell behind.
West Ham took the lead through Ricardo Vaz Te, on 16 minutes and Mohamed Diame, 10 minutes after the interval, while Antonio Valencia, on 31 minutes, and Robin Van Persie, 13 minutes from time, brought the league leaders level. Despite laying siege to the Hammers’ goal, the visitors were unable to produce a winner.
Unlike United, Manchester City did score late on, Carlos Tevez providing the winner against Wigan Athletic with seven minutes remaining to reduce their city rivals’ league advantage to 13 points. Roberto Mancini’s side can move to within 10 points of United if they win their game in hand. For Wigan, defeat leaves them in the relegation zone, three points from safety.
Meanwhile, John Terry scored in either half to help Chelsea run out 3-0 winners over Fulham. David Luiz’s long-range free-kick gave the Blues the lead before Terry’s brace ensured Chelsea return to third place, a point above Arsenal.
